At the age of 21, Reed Montgomery, the founder of EV Clean, sold his first EV steam cleaner by canvassing for appointments. He vividly remembers demonstrating the cleaner to a customer who was amazed by its effectiveness on the oven and asked, “What else does it do?” He recalls saying “I don’t really know yet, we’ll have to find out I guess.”

Reed soon questioned why steam cleaners hadn’t become popular in the United States despite how incredibly effective they are. Through research, he discovered that only a few companies dominate the cleaning supply industry, none of which make quality system systems, and that most cleaning chemicals are unregulated. Most are carcinogenic, cause long term health problems such as asthma and allergies, and the vast majority kill immune systems. Many of these products are derived from petroleum oil, meaning they do not evaporate, which leads to areas getting dirtier, faster. The use of these products are contributing significantly to pollution.

A 2018 study from the University of California revealed that 50% of emissions come from the 5% of petroleum byproducts used to make chemicals and plastics, while the other 50% come from fossil fuels. This information reinforced Reed’s belief that steam systems, though still a novel concept in the United States, could make a substantial difference.

Reed founded EV Clean with the mission to provide high-quality cleaning services that eliminate chemicals in homes and businesses. By doing so, he aims to introduce and popularize steam cleaning technology across the country.
